the sufficiency of Scripture

Routinely we tell folks that the Bible, God’s Unique Book, addresses everything which we face in life, specifically or in precept or principle.  Thus we refer to the “sufficiency of Scripture.”  One of our most pointed reminders of this truth is found in II Peter 1:2-4, “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord:  seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.  For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.”

In the context, verses 5-11 exhort us toward spiritual excellence on the basis of His faithfulness to fulfill His promises to us.  What do you think about this piece of “God’s anthology?”  Do you use the Bible promises to gain strength, wisdom, and direction for your life?  Do you understand the sufficient nature of Scripture?  Do you trust in the promises of God?

Thanks for giving us an opportunity to share, Johnny and Jo!

Yes, the Scripture is sufficient for believers in countless ways. One of my favorite ways to benefit from the sufficiency God has provided is to use favorite Scriptures to consider, or to use as prayers, throughout the day. As a new believer, I memorized James 1:2-6, and in my work I frequently pray verse 5: "Dear Lord, You said, "If any of you lacks wisdom let him ask of God. . ." What is Your wisdom for this situation?" Another verse I find myself praying often is Psalm 25:4, "Show me Your ways, O LORD, teach me Your path." Please show me the right path.

Jerri,
The psalmist said, "Thy Word I have treaured in my heart that I might not sin against Thee (Psalm 119:11). He was using "heart" as the seat of intellect. . .in other words he was referring to the memorization of Scripture to help him in times of decision and struggle. I am so thankful that God always keeps His word to us! I am encouraged that you find the same strength for living in His promises.

Man, to be a partaker in the divine nature. Talk about blowing your mind. That is an awesome concept that makes me ask questions like, how? and why me? I just hope that God keeps giving me the faith to look for direction in the Bible...and not in earthly things.

I tell you the truth - the day I stop believing Scripture is sufficient, is the day I leave the ministry. There is no way we can do what we do, as missionaries and ministers, without believing in it's complete nature. I don't have to know how it works; I just have to live like I believe it does.
